Thread Gardens offers a variety of knitting, crochet and weaving classes, from beginner to advanced, designed to help students master the basic techniques, and free themselves from working from patterns.

A Taste Of Knitting

A Taste Of Knitting" class samples
Knitting Basics - Learn to knit, purl, cast on, cast off

In this introductory class, students learn will learn the most basic of the stitches necessary for any knitting project.

  • Cast on
  • Knit Stitch
  • Cast Off

The project will be a completed rectangle, which can be turned into a small bag or pouch (eg. ipod sleeve), a headband, small scarf etc.

As part of the class fee, students will receive

  • One Pair of Brittany Birch or Bamboo Circular Knitting Needles
  • Practice Yarn
  • A 100 yard hank of handpainted medium weight merino wool for their project
  • Handouts with lots of pictures
  • A handly little container to hold it all

Beginning Knitting ~ Texture

Beginning Knitting ~ Texture" class samples

Explore the creation of textures and patterns using just knit and purl stitches.

We will cover

  • The difference between knit and purl stitches
  • Garter stitch
  • Stockinette and Reverse Stockinette
  • Ribbings
  • Seed
  • Basketweave
  • Other patterns

Students will create a sampler using the techniques covered in class.

Students will need to supply their own yarn and needles, or supplies may be purchased before the class.

Students will receive handouts for future reference.

Students should already know how to cast on, knit, and cast off in order to get the most from this class.

We will cover

  • How to create cables
  • Left leaning and right leaning cables
  • How to read a simple cable chart

Students will create a sampler using the techniques covered in class.

Students will need to supply their own yarn and needles, or supplies may be purchased before the class.

Students will receive handouts for future reference.

Students should be very comfortable with casting on, knit stitch, purl stitch, and cast off in order to get the most from this class.

Explore adding color color to your knitting projects.

We will cover

  • How to best used handdyed and space dyed yarns
  • Combining multiple yarns together to vary color
  • Adding Stripes
  • Intarsia techniques
  • Weaving in ends as we go

Students will create a sampler using the techniques covered in class.

Yarn samples for this class are included in the registration fee.

Students will receive handouts for future reference.

Students should already know how to cast on, knit, and cast off in order to get the most from this class.

Mobius Knitting

Mobius Knitting" class samples

Create a true mobius strip for scarves, shawls, using special cast on techniques.

We will cover

  • What makes a mobius strip
  • Different ways to acheive a knitted mobius strip
  • Several cast on techniques to create a true mobeius, with one twist, knit from the center out
  • Considerations for cast off techniques

Students will cast on and begin knitting a mobius scarf

Students will need to supply their own yarn and circular needles, at least 29" long, or supplies may be purchased before the class.

Students will receive handouts for future reference.

Students should already know how to cast on, knit, and cast off in order to get the most from this class.

A Taste Of Sock Knitting

A Taste Of Sock Knitting" class samples

Learn the concepts behind a toe-up, shortrow heel sock in this 2 session class. The techniques learned can be used to create any sized sock desired.

We will cover

  • Anatomy of a Sock
  • Survey different methods to knit socks
  • Learn to create short rows for heel and toe
  • Calculations for sock parts
  • Using yarn markers
  • Reading the knitting

By the end of the second class, students will have created a small, child-sized sock.

Students will need to supply their own lightweight worsted or sport weight yarn and appropriate circular needles, at least 29" long, or supplies may be purchased before the class. Since we will be knitting in class, the thinner the yarn that you bring, the more knitting you will need to do.

Students will receive handouts for future reference.

Students should already know how to cast on, knit using a circular method, and cast off, increase, and decrease in order to get the most from this class.

This is a 2 session class. The second session is at the same time, same day of the week, one week later.

Freeform Crochet

Freeform Crochet" class samples

Escape the pattern, invent your own!

In this four session class, we will cover

  • How to make scrumbles ~ freeform crochet bits and pieces
  • Joining scrumbles into larger units
  • Using a template to create a piece in a desired shape and size

Students will create a project, scarf using techniques learned in class.

Students will need to supply their hooks and yarn. Or they may borrow studio hooks, and purchase yarn at the studio for the class.

Students will receive handouts for future reference.

Students should already know how to chain stitch and single, and double crochet in order to get the most from this class.
